Another scene from the Laurel Del poplars. I have wanted to get a good shot of the view from the road, which is stunning. One day in the fog, a friend drove while I took a picture. The muted green colors of the photo were a particular inspiration.

I have been photographing and painting the poplars in the Laurel Del area of Monte Rio for some years now. I never get tired of them, and to see them as you round the corner from Highway 116 is stunning. Recently I was able to talk to a local resident and found out that the woman who originally owned all the property of this area that abuts the Russian River planted poplar trees to mark the boundaries of the parcels of properties she was to sell off. I am forever grateful as she created this beautiful stand of trees that have sparked many paintings. I started painting the trees when bare in winter, but lately have been focused on the trees with leaves in various stages of color.

I captured these poplars in a photograph on a windy day visible from the entrance to Riverfront Regional Park on Eastside road on the way to Healdsburg. During the Kincade fire in the Fall of 2019, on a local news site, I saw a photo of these trees surrounded in smoke. I became very frightened for them. I was relieved to see that they were unharmed. But the trees and surrounding area went through another scare in August of 2020, as again these trees were in an evacuation zone, due this time to the Wallbridge fire. Though I am drawn to burnt trees in the forest as they present beautiful lines, I have not painted any trees that burned in the fires that have plagued us in the last number of years. I am busy memorializing the trees that capture my imagination, and hope they don’t become just a memory.

I came upon this exquisite scene while driving through my neighborhood on a fall day, when the lighting suddenly became very dramatic. Luckily, my neighborhood has plentiful mature, interesting trees, since during Covid-19 times I don’t leave my neighborhood much.

A favorite walking park of mine is the Sonoma Regional Park, off of Hwy 12. Recently, I eyed from a distance this lineup of bare trees catching the sun. I knew right away that the scene would create a nice painting. I used Banana Mash paper to lend texture and depth, and I love how the colors come out on this medium-dark tan paper.

I painted this scene again using a slightly different configuration of trees so I could test out colors for the final piece. I was only planning to quickly put down a tree or two, and saw that the drawing was coming along very successfully, so kept going. I decided to finish both paintings, and worked out different color compositions for each. This painting is also on the thick, textural Banana Mash paper.

I was visited in my studio by a man transplanted from Boston who told me he had purchased a nursery in Sebastopol. He showed me a video of trees on the property, suggested there were trees there I would likely be interested in, and I should visit. A week or two later, on a hot day in early November, I followed his advice. I found the grounds much wilder and less manicured than I remembered, but very captivating. I spent the better part of a day there, and took many photos that I am inspired to work with. He was right about the poplars. I think this painting has captured the wildness of the place.

Driving back from Guerneville on Hwy 116, I had recently been attracted to a line of trees with excellent fall colors. I had my eye on this stand of trees for some time, and and been looking for the right lighting to get a good picture. While taking the photo, I looked to the right and found this tree catching the light. I immediately knew it was a good subject for my burgeoning pointillist technique.

Fir trees inspire me to capture the lines of the needles. This particular tree, found on the shores of Lake Tahoe also has a great structure. I will forever be painting fir trees in this manner in an effort to achieve a little bit of the zen of the great Chinese and Japanese brush painters who so masterfully capture fir trees.

This painting is of a tree that I pass by often in my neighborhood. I have a really cool photo that I took of this tree with many birds in the bare branches. This piece is another example of a test for color composition I deemed worthy of finishing as a piece. I like this test because I did not try to capture all the lines. I think I have caught an essence of the tree by limiting the lines.

Prior to working on this painting, I had been working on a number of paintings with a pointillist style. These paintings are very time consuming and de-emphasize the line work that has been the basis of my artwork for years. I thought it important to counter balance that work by doing some pieces that celebrate line and come together quickly. I came upon this tree while photographing my favorite poplars in the Laurel Dell area near Duncans Mills. I peaked up a driveway and was stunned by this tree. It was very fun to paint.

Another in my series of pointillist paintings. Once I took the leap into pointillism, I have energized around this approach and have many lovely trees photographed that I hope to work with, many of them such as this one from the Laurel Dell area of incredible poplar trees on Hwy 116 near Duncans Mills. My favorite artist who paints in a pointillist way is Gustav Klimt.

My obsession with poplar trees had led me to ruminate for some time on painting them with leaves. My art has for quite awhile been based on lines, so going in this direction felt like a bit of a turn, but I have moved in this direction, combining line and dot in paintings such as Pine Trees Dripping in a Grey Mist and Eucalyptus. The photograph I had of this tree finally inspired me to take that leap. As often happens, I was a little ahead of myself. I started the painting and was going to abandon it, when on second thought I realized I was on the right track. Now I have hopeful plans to do many more.

I think of this tree as a one-armed tree, with one particular curiously long limb. I found this tree in the Redwood National Park in Humboldt county. There is a similar tree I frequently photograph in Riverfront Regional park nearby where I live. They are remarkably similar trees.

The collector who bought this painting grew up in this county and told me her family camped in the area I found these trees in Laurel Dell off of Hwy 116. Nowadays these incredible poplar trees stand majestic over a neighborhood of houses out in a beautiful country setting, near the Russian River. These poplars have inspired so many paintings, I wish I could camp under them and observe them in the changing light of the day.

I worked on this painting in February of 2019 during a “river of rain” that was pelting the skylight over my studio. It made me think about hikes I have taken in the woods in the rain and I set about capturing that feeling. The title is borrowed from a Jesse Colin Young song I have always loved that he wrote while he lived in Northern California. It expertly captures the ambience of the area. The trees I captured are from Lake Tahoe.

My painting process is to do the line work first, then add the color ground. This is backwards from most painters, but I do it this way for a few reasons. First and foremost is that I work on paper, so the line work is much easier to achieve before the paper gets a bit wavy from large washes. Once I have the line work, I have a better idea about how I want the color ground to interact with the lines and what colors I want to use.

In this case I knew from the beginning the colors I wanted. I photographed this tree on a stormy day with a wonderful grey and purple sky. I did not want to obscure the line work from the colors I was using which would not be so thin, so I tried out holding back the color from the edges of the lines and I discovered that this was an interesting effect.

This was a test for an eventual large painting with two trees. As many other artists have found, frequently the tests you do are more free than the larger works. I was so loose with this test, it was just tossed aside amongst a heap of papers of color tests, never intending to do anything with it but be a reference for colors. One day I rescued it and saw it’s worth. Later, I included it in a show at the Rohnert Park library. The organizers had visitors vote on their favorite piece and this one came in second overall, and was the most popular of the many pieces I had in the show. I sold the piece and the experience has forever altered the way I feel about tests.
