Eucalyptus

The first time I visited the Laguna de Santa Rosa Trail in Sebastopol, California, a gorgeous sunset bathed everything in a warm, orange glow, transforming this stand of Eucalyptus trees into a striking red and black mosaic.

Still Standing

Dead trees are of great interest to me. The bones of the tree show well, and can be quite eloquent. This pair of trees had red needles still attached. Found in Sequoia National Park, near the summit on the way to Kings Canyon National Park, California.

I was attracted to this tree as I envisioned that vertical strokes would best translate the way I wanted to paint it. I have been studying a particular Chinese painting that utilizes vertical strokes to describe a fir tree. Mine is miles away from this masterpiece. I am sure I will have another go at it in the future. The coloring was inspired by a Japanese calligraphy painting.
